On this course you will learn to bend horn (black buffalo horn) into a crook using traditional methods of either heat or boiling the horn.

You will learn to bend the horn around the jig - that is the preformed shape of the jig and you will learn to bend the horn around this.  Take off the corners with the file, sand it, take all the file marks off.  Sand it using fine grade sandpaper and steel wool.

You will also learn to prepare for polishing.  Drill the hole in the handle to attach the shank.  Glue the handle to the shank, make a peg joint.  Dress the nodules on the shank, oil the it and attach a ferrule.

Tools used: jig form, g-clamps, wooden wedges, coping saw, files, chisel, mallet, sandpaper, steel wool, heat gun and boiling kettle.

Learning outcome: You will learn to form the horn into the desired shape of the crook - nose out or nose in (market stick).  You will learn to shape the handle, how to prepare the horn for polishing, remove all marks and polish the horn.  Attach the horn to the handle, finish the handle and attach the ferrule.
